➤ The sustainable main material: Rattan
This rapidly renewable raw material is obtained from rattan palms, which grow as climbing plants in the tropical forests of Indonesia. Their branches and trunks are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried. The inside of the branches and trunks is used in various thicknesses for furniture, baskets or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for filigree wickerwork, such as the well-known ‘Viennese weave’. As rattan palms need an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing is an incentive for the local population to preserve healthy, natural forests.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished lampshade
Our Kencana lampshades are handcrafted by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Bali. Each piece begins with a sturdy metal frame, carefully shaped by hand to form the base. Using long, slender strands of rattan, the artisans then weave each fibre individually into the frame with remarkable precision. Strips of firm rattan bark are used to secure the weave tightly in place. Creating a single lampshade takes around three hours and demands both patience and a high level of craftsmanship.
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
